WOMENS' COAT STYLES

With the cool winter breezes blowing ever closer, it’s high time you thought about your winter clothing and, in particular, your winter coats.

Because they’re the top layer of your chosen winter outfits, a winter coat is really the key to your overall look and style. Not only that but your winter coat is also your main source of warmth, helping you wrap up when the icy fronts hit.

Here we consider a few winter coat styles set to take 2018 by storm (no pun intended) and provide a few examples:

CHECKED COATS

This winter will be dominated by checked coats. These evergreen wardrobe favourites are a winner because they’re a safe statement piece… they’re more interesting than a solid coloured coat, for example, but you can still look formal and chic.

The great thing about checked coats is their diversity. There are so many types of check patterns, such as Prince of Wales, herringbone & houndstooth, which are available in warm, snug fabrics and a host of beautiful colours.

Winter coats like this one from Capture (pictured left) are particularly great because they’re so easy to match with all your favourite dresses, skirts, jeans and trousers. They are usually made with a brilliant fabric composition like wool, polyester and viscose, for a warm, breathable and durable feel.

Another perk of checked coats is how they can be classically cut to appear at once timeless and current, stylish and flattering.

Large check patterns for example, as shown in the Emerge coat above, are perfect for those who want a versatile coat that can be dressed up or down, that will look equally great worn over an elegant evening dress or a relaxed pair of jeans and your favourite t-shirt.

SUEDE AND FAUX SUEDE COATS

They say that fashion is cyclical and it appears this year’s coat trends are reverting to the ever-stylish suede and faux suede coats of the 1970s as well as faux fur and faux shearling trims.

While classic suede will still prove popular, faux suede has many benefits too. Often made from 100% polyester, synthetic suede is water resistant, easier to clean and maintain, and is cheaper than its classic counterpart.

Faux suede winter coats, like this elegant example from premium brand Capture, offer classic lines designed to lengthen your figure and a practical but stylish collar and lapel. Add to this the suede finish and you’ve got the type of coat you’ll be able to wear for decades.

Shearling, another term for lambskin, is another highly sought after material, because of its incredible softness. But it can also ethically troubling and expensive. Enter faux shearling, which retains the softness of touch and look of real shearling, but instead uses vinyl with wool or synthetic fibres attached to it.

All these soft, plush and warm fabrics make the ideal winter coat and leave you feeling like you’re wrapped up in your favourite blanket.

70s INSPIRED COLOUR THEMES

The 70s-inspired theme isn’t limited to cuts or fabrics either. Colours this year will also fit the retro bill, with mustards, berry reds, pink & orange, shades of brown and teal all in vogue. These colours exude a feminine, pretty charm and will feel new, even to those of us who remember it the first-time round!

Coats like this Grace Hill stunner (above) combine 100% leather suede with a delectable tan finish, which allows wearers to just as easily pair it with jeans and ankle boots for a casual look or an evening dress and heels for a sleek look.

Another popular colour this year, especially for suede, is the beautiful forest green, which is accentuated in this suede biker jacket from leading brand Emerge.

It’s trendy, warm and flattering all at once.

Aside from checked coats and faux suedes, puffer coats, classic athletic-style coats and shaggy, folky, homemade coats should also prove popular winter coat choices in Australia in 2018.
