Apple shaped women have a rounded shape in the abdomen, with a fuller figure overall. Because of this, the apple, or oval, shape is a common body shape for plus size ladies and for those over 40. You’re probably an apple if you have similar measurements around your chest, waist and hips.
The apple body shape isn’t an easy one to dress, but women can produce a slimming effect by wearing light fabrics, women's clothing with vertical stripes, or block colours. Avoid unnecessarily bulky fabrics for tops, as this will only add additional weight.
Find tops that enhance the volume to your bust and shoulders while also emphasizing and defining your waistline.
- Deeper V-necklines or wider necklines
- Nipped in waists
- Semi fitted or loose and drapey
- Shirts and jackets that end at the hip
- Tight fitted tops
- Small prints
- Embellishments or ruffles around waistline and bust
- Tucking in tops
When browsing for bottoms, stick to those that would enhance your natural curves and shape without adding extra bulkiness.
- Pocketed cargo pants
- Straight or slightly flared skirts
- Bottoms that have a bit of a stretch
- Extremely short bottoms
- Tight clinging or bulky skirts
- Overly tapered trousers
Swimsuits that define your waist and add curves where necessary to your figure.
A one-piece suit which has built-in support for your chest.
Those with ruching (gathers in the fabric) in the torso region also give a slimming effect.
Tankinis are flattering, especially with a midsection that drapes loosely.
