There are a lot of opinions out there about whether or not you need to wash your jeans at all. We’ll take the middle ground and say that while you don’t need to wash your jeans nearly as much as you think, it’s still a good idea to wash them every once in a while!
But how do you go about washing your most important wardrobe staple?
There are a few signs that it’s time to wash your jeans, beyond the smell or visible dirt. If they’re stretched out or sagging at the knees, it’s a good bet your jeans are due for a rinse. And yes, it’s OK to put this revered garment in the washing machine, although hand washing will reduce wear and tear. Just make sure you read the washing label first for any specific instructions.
1. Turn your jeans inside out.
2. Fill your laundry sink with cold water and a small amount of detergent.
3. Soak the jeans fully under water for 15-30 minutes.
4. Rinse well.
5. Roll them up and press down to release any water (don’t wring them!).

WASHING DISTRESSED OR RIPPED JEANS
Follow the steps mentioned above, but make sure that you use a gentle cycle and a gentle washing detergent - hand washing is the best option.
Be sure to avoid the dryer, since this could further fray any rips. If you have to use the dryer, use the lowest heat setting.
Try to limit how often you wash your jeans, since repeated washing can risk damaging the distressed look.
WASHING BLACK JEANS
Follow the same steps as above, but make sure you use a colour-preserving detergent for black or darker jeans to prevent fading.
It’s also a good idea to skip the dryer and go straight to the clothesline to air dry.
