8 tips for make up that lasts

Whether you find your foundation disappearing by mid-afternoon, or you're gearing up for a special event, we detail the easy ways to ensure your makeup goes the distance.

  1. Your prep begins the night before, when you do a gentle exfoliation followed by a hydrating moisturiser or overnight mask (try the coconut milk-laced Kora Organics Noni Glow Sleeping Mask), so skin is soft and plump the next morning.

  2. "You need to start with primer, followed by a longwearing foundation that's not oily or heavy," advises makeup artist Nigel Stanislaus. Pick one specific to your skin type (dry, oily, uneven) or desired look (radiant, matte). Natio Pure Mineral Face Primer is oil-free and conditions skin with jojoba and shea butters.

  3. To ensure longevity, build your makeup - face, eyes, lips - in light layers, as opposed to one thick coat (it looks more natural, too), using either creamy formulas or lightweight, finely-milled powders, like Dr Hauschka Eyeshadow Trio in Sunstone

  4. A foundation in a slightly thicker liquid or cream, like Nude by Nature Flawless Liquid Foundation (it offers medium to full coverage with a satin-matte finish) is your best bet as powder can settle in fine lines and dry patches, while watery liquids don't last long.

  5. A light dusting of loose powder (try the velvety Natio Loose Powder in Translucent) will set your base products while still maintaining a natural finish.

  6. Stanislaus recommends you "apply a coat of longwearing matte lip [liner] colour first, followed by gloss, either clear or in the same colour as your lipstick." Bite Beauty High Pigment Lip Pencil in Bramble contains the same amount of the antioxidant resveratrol found in five glasses of wine.

  7. Top off your finished look with a mist of setting spray or an energizing mist like Kora Organics Energizing Citrus Mist (it contains a blend of noni extract, aloe vera, lemongrass and mandarin). Just like a hairspray, it locks everything into place and ensures longevity, so your makeup will look just-applied well into the night.

  8. Keep blotting papers or a translucent pressed powder compact, such as the ultra-light Napoleon Perdis Camera Finish Close-Up Complexion Perfecting Powder, handy to nix any shine that creeps up throughout the day or night.
