Nora Roberts ‘Come Sundown’: The Easy Reads Book Club

Prologue for the latest Nora Roberts book, Come Sundown
Prologue for the latest Nora Roberts book, Come Sundown

A powerful and passionate new novel by Nora Roberts.

The Bodine ranch and resort in western Montana is a family business, an idyllic spot for vacationers. A little over thirty thousand acres and home to four generations, it’s kept running by Bodine Longbow with the help of a large staff, including new hire Callen Skinner. There was another member of the family once: Bodine’s aunt, Alice, who ran off before Bodine was born. She never returned, and the Longbows don’t talk about her much. The younger ones, who never met her, quietly presume she’s dead. But she isn’t. She is not far away, part of a new family, one she never chose—and her mind has been shattered…

When a bartender leaves the resort late one night, and Bo and Cal discover her battered body in the snow, it’s the first sign that danger lurks in the mountains that surround them. The police suspect Cal, but Bo finds herself trusting him—and turning to him as another woman is murdered and the Longbows are stunned by Alice’s sudden reappearance. The twisted story she has to tell about the past—and the threat that follows in her wake—will test the bonds of this strong family, and thrust Bodine into a darkness she could never have imagined.

A Q&A about Come Sundown, Nora Roberts’ brand-new bestseller, with Antonia Hodgson, Editor-in-Chief at Little, Brown Book Group and Nora’s UK editor.

There is a real mix of romance, suspense and murder mystery in Come Sundown, which existing fans will recognise! Which strand did you find most compelling in this new novel?

There’s something about that mix that makes Nora Roberts unique, I think. It’s what I find so satisfying about her books – they have all the appeal of a psychological suspense novel, but there’s also a passionate (and pretty steamy!) love story along with an intriguing murder plot. In Come Sundown the romance between Bodine and Callen is wonderful – they are more than a match for each other. But it actually begins with a powerful prologue set in the 90s, about Bodine’s aunt. This sets up a heart-wrenching and gripping mystery that has definitely stayed with me. There are some wonderful escapist moments in Come Sundown, but it also really packs a punch.

Nora Roberts has sold over 550 million copies worldwide – but for new readers, is this a good place to start?

Well naturally, I would say yes! I think one of the joys of Nora’s books is that they are so consistently entertaining – as any fan will agree. You know you can just settle down, confident in the knowledge you’re going to have a fantastic time. But I think her recent ‘standalones’ such as Come Sundown, The Obsession, Whiskey Beach, The Collector – are great places to start. (Whiskey Beach is written from the perspective of the male protagonist, which is an interesting difference. Nora’s books always have strong and independent female leads.) They all have that great mix of passion and suspense.

Come Sundown is set in a Montana resort and ranch – is this a typical setting for Nora Roberts?

There is definitely a horse theme that runs through Nora’s books! Her first novel, Irish Thoroughbred, was set on a horse farm in Maryland (where Nora lives). And her novel Montana Sky is a fan favourite – it was made into a movie, in fact. I love the way she changes settings with each book or series. She seems to be at home in any setting – whether it’s the wide open spaces of Montana, or a slightly futuristic New York when she writes as J.D. Robb. I suppose the point is you always know you are in very good hands.

A sense of home seems to be very important in the novel – would you agree?

Definitely. Bodine is so comfortable running the resort – this is her family, her home, her life. Whereas Callen has had to leave to really make something of himself. He had a complicated childhood, and now he’s back it’s not certain whether he’ll stay. There’s at least one person who wants him gone, that’s for sure…
