Looking to change jobs into the fashion industry?

For many of us, fashion has always been a bit of an indulgence that we enjoy in our lives. From weekend shopping trips, online shopping binges and wardrobe makeovers, the ever-changing fashion world is fun to watch and participate in.

The fashion industry has traditionally been a hard one to crack when it comes to getting a job. Many positions in the industry are hotly contested and require you to work your way up from the bottom to the top, doing years of hard-yards along the way. However with the rise in technology and an increase in online influencers, more and more amateur fashionistas are finding news ways to make money in fashion.

If fashion is in your blood and you want to share your talents with the world, here are some ways you can make money in fashion and do what you love!

1. Become a fashion blogger
With the online boom, many people have already found success documenting their fashion trails through an online blog. But first a disclaimer – it takes a lot of time and patience to reach a point where you will be paid for your work or receive exciting opportunities. You need to concentrate on building a loyal online following through a variety of sources – your blog and then also through social media such as Facebook and Instagram. You can make money as a fashion blogger through advertising placements on your blog, as well as product endorsements. Before you start, perhaps consider a niche audience to target. Perhaps you want to document great finds for plus-size shoppers, or you only want to write about vintage wear. Having a niche will make it easier for you to generate a loyal following.

2. Sell your own designs
Online retail stores such as TradeMe, Ebay and Etsy have made it easy for amateur clothes, accessory and jewellery designers to get a foot in the door and kick-start their career in fashion. These sites cut down the cost of getting your business started, and open you up to a wider audience. Once you feel that you’re a bit more established, setting up your own online store or e-commerce site is easy with site building tools such as Shopify. Having an online store is a great way to generate some extra income for yourself – particularly if you don’t have a lot of time but want to keep yourself busy and keep some cash coming in. It’s a great option for a stay-at-home mum or if you’re on maternity leave!

3. Become a stylist
If you have an entrepreneurial spirit but you don’t have the practical talents to make your own clothes or jewellery, then perhaps consider becoming a personal or photographic stylist. It gives you the opportunity to work with leading brands and amazing fashion pieces, while helping others feel good about themselves. Many people, both men and women, struggle when it comes to shopping and creating their own personal style, and they need a little guidance to help them make the right choices for their budget, their figure or their professional environment. Provide wardrobe makeovers, colour consultations and personal shopping assistance – you’ll be surprised how many people will be seeking your services!

4. Work for an established brand
Do you have a favourite brand or clothes that you LOVE? Keep an eye out for jobs in the classifieds or submit your CV to their HR department for upcoming roles. Working for a popular brand might mean starting off in a role that isn’t quite what you were aiming for, but getting your foot in the door will give you an opportunity to showcase your skills and work your way towards your dream role. Whether it’s in retail or online, fashion businesses need a range of skills and roles to keep the business ticking, so think about how your skills can transfer to the fashion environment.

Working in the creative and crazy fashion industry comes with great perks but is not without hard work! There is always more than one clear path to achieving your dream role and make money in fashion, and these are just a few of the ways you can get started.
