Embroidery: A Winter Trend Embraced by Celebs, High Fashion Brands & Us!
As a kid, I remember that my mother had a real talent for embroidery.
I’ve often thought it was sad that skills such as sewing, embroidery and crochet are not as common as they once were. So, although I never inherited mum’s mad skills with a needle, I am excited to see that embroidery is making a long awaited comeback onto the fashion scene.
It’s set to be one of the biggest trends for the Autumn/Winter seasons and it’s popping up everywhere, adding bursts of colour to an otherwise typically monochrome season.
And it seems that no piece of your wardrobe is off the table. Shirts, bags, jackets, boots and even jeans are getting a colourful threaded facelift. Seen on runways from the likes of Alexander McQueen and Dolce&Gabbana, right through to high-street fashion stores, it’s a statement that will be hard to miss this season.
Embroidery has been around a long time, but, like most trends, it’s fallen in and out of favour with the vagaries of fashion. This iteration of the trend sees designers take your favourite classic pieces – think a black leather jacket, a crisp white shirt, slimline jeans or a simple tee – and adding eclectic embroidered detailing.
They’re really not being subtle about it either. Instead of printed fabrics, statement runway pieces, such McQueen’s gowns and Cavalli’s jackets, have this season been embroidered with eye-catching florals. Others have opted for abstract or almost doodle-like designs with a pop art flavour, giving your everyday staples a fun and quirky makeover.
How to wear embroidered fashion A popular place to start this season is going to be denim. You’ll be hard pressed to find a woman that doesn’t own a pair or three of jeans, and while denim seems to maintain its stronghold as a fashion staple, it’s not immune to the influences of the season! Jeans are such a fun way to introduce this trend to your wardrobe without feeling too far out of your comfort zone. Embroidered jeans add a twist to an otherwise standard outfit. Your go-to of jeans, a shirt and a blazer suddenly become a whole new outfit!
It’s a trend that is being embraced by those on the celeb fashion circuit too. Style queen, Gigi Hadid, can do no wrong when it comes to fashion, and has been rocking the embroidered jean look with ease. Amal Clooney went for a vintage 70s inspired look, with her flower power flared pair.
There aren’t any rules either about mixing and matching designs. An embroidered or beaded jacket paired with embroidered jeans is not off limits. If you’re not bold enough to mix busy designs, start with something a little less conspicuous, such as an embroidered handbag or boots.
DIY designs Feeling crafty? The best bit about this trend is that it can also give new life to some of your favourite, albeit a little dated, wardrobe pieces, yourself. Although, if you’re like me, and don’t have the talent, or the patience, to adding some stitching yourself, a much easier alternative is to try embroidered appliques.
Because the appliques are three dimensional, they really add depth and texture, catching the light to show off the detailing. While florals seem to be the favour of the season, because of the huge range of applique options, you’re certainly not restricted, so get creative! You should be able to find what you’re looking for at your local haberdashery store, or have a look online.
This new embroidery trend gives a refined and high-end look, without necessarily the high-end price tag. So get ready to embrace your creative side and express yourself through the added colour and pop this season.
