Having a few sweaters in your wardrobe is a great start to keeping warm and is great for layering under coats and bigger jackets. We’ve picked out this winter’s must-have styles.
Crew neck sweaters
Crew necks are a really versatile and casual sweater style. They look great with shorts and jeans alike. They are flattering with a focus on the shoulders, giving the illusion of broadening them. To dress them up a bit, put a collared shirt underneath and fold the collar down over the sweater neck. We love burgundy crew-necks over a t shirt with dark-blue jeans and brown, leather sneakers with burgundy accents. Slip a bomber jacket over the top if you’re still feeling chilly.
Shawl collar or roll-neck sweater
These are a bit more interesting since the extra material draws focus to your neck. Take care to pick plain ones with small shawl collars or roll-necks since large loose styles look unbalanced . We love shawl collars with a contrasting t-shirt underneath and light-blue jeans combined with a pair of dressy brogues. For roll-necks keep your pants choice classy in dark or neutral colours and close fitting. Combine this with leather dress shoes in dark brown or black leather. We especially love dark reds and navy for the pants. Try roll or shawl-necks out for a bit of a change.
Zip-neck sweaters
These are the sporty brother of the two above styles. They can look great with track pants, running shorts and any sporty gym gear, a sporty t-shirt underneath is great. If you want them to look a little less athletic, pick a black zip-neck and pair with blue jeans and dressy sneakers instead.
But, how do I choose?
Make sure to pay attention to the material as well as the style. Merino is a fantastic option and despite being more expensive than its artificial counterparts, can keep you warm without overheating. Other great options are wool blends and cashmere. Avoid polyester since it has a tendency to pill and be uncomfortably static. Remember, a good sweater investment now can mean a favourite sweater that lasts for many years, not just one season.
