Home is where the heart is. That is of course until we run out of things to do and find ourselves bored, unmotivated and still lying in bed at lunch time during the weekend.

Whether you’re a stay at home mum, like to hibernate at home over winter or just like to spend quality time rugged up in a cardigan on the couch during the weekend, it always pays to have a few things to do around the home when you start to lack creativity – or funds in your bank account to get out and about!

First things first, there is usually always a chore or two to be done at home, but when you’re simply not in the mood for housework, all it takes is a little creativity and you can drum up something to occupy yourself within the walls of your very own home.

1) Self therapy
It may sound like something that only well trained yogis would rejoice in, but the truth is that we all need a bit of tender loving care from time to time. Especially during winter as the chill sets in. Throw on your coziest merino clothing, meditate, say some affirmations, take a long bath and detoxify your body. It’s important to not feel guilty about taking this time for yourself. If you’ve got kids, set them up with a game, creative task or put on a movie and take some time for yourself.

2) Read a book
It sounds overly simple however reading is a great way to un-clutter your mind and remove yourself from the realities of real life for a little while. Throw on your ‘comfies’, curl up by the fire, whip out a novel and you might learn something new or become inspired through adventurous fiction. Have you heard about our book club?

3) Exercise
It’s one of the simplest things to do at home with benefits that can’t be counted. You don’t have to go to the gym to stay fit. Do some simple exercises at home, such as push-ups, dips and sit-ups. Go outside in your backyard and run around, jump rope, kick a ball around with the kids, shoot hoops or even get into some gardening – it all counts. There are plenty of online tutorials or videos you can follow for at-home cardio, dancing or pilates.

4) Yoga
Of course, another exercise or relaxation method that you can easily perform at home is yoga. You can find videos at your local library or online. You’ll find this a refreshing way to start your day or to unwind after a busy day in the office or with the kids.

5) Scrapbooking
Scrapbooking is a great way to document favourite family memories and momentoes. Start by choosing an assortment of family pictures taken during a number of different life events. Compile photos into groups and begin to make a scrapbook.

6) Sort out your wardrobe
Over the years, we tend to go through phases with fashion and clothing that we like and loathe. Your wardrobe’s probably packed full of clothes that half of them you don’t even wear. Plan your outfits for the upcoming week, and be ruthless with the pieces that you’re never going to wear a day in your life again. This will go a long way in saving you time, especially during the mornings when you’re in a rush to get out the door.

It’s also a good chance to store away some of your summer tops and dresses to make way to fill your drawers up with merino tops and luscious knitwear to snuggle into at home while you’re relaxing.

7) Learn a new recipe
Surprise your family, spouse or guests with a special dish – get creative and branch out of your comfort zone. Host themed meals such as Mexican fiesta, winter roasts or a mid winter Christmas Party.

8) Spring clean
Exhausted everything on your list? Maybe it is time to do that spring clean you’ve been putting off. Tackling jobs one at a time can make the process a little less daunting. Turn the music up and whip out the mop. Clean the fridge, clean the oven, and wipe the dust from your windowsills – you’ll feel great for getting these out of the way.

It’s natural that you might feel like hiding away at home over winter, you just need to find ways to avoid cabin fever! What other ways do you enjoy passing time at home, either by yourself or with your family?
